On 29 October 2024, the Sot (Reatillo) River in Sot de Chera experienced an extraordinary flood that destroyed infrastructure, riparian vegetation and key recreational spaces, severely impacting the village and causing two fatalities. For a municipality partially reliant on river-based tourism, the event was a major social and environmental setback.
The community now faces the challenge of restoring its riverscape, navigating technical constraints, different visions and multiple intervention timelines. Within this context, RiVIVE will support a participatory restoration approach grounded in riverscape conviviality, recognising the river as a living socio-ecological system.
A Riparian Assembly and a collaboratively informed Master Plan will guide local decision-making and recovery.
On 10 October, the launch session presented the first steps of this process and gathered citizen input.
- From loss to learning.
- From devastation to regeneration.
- From fragmentation to conviviality.
RiVIVE is honoured to accompany Sot de Chera in rebuilding its river future.
